My microphone audio is not recorded – what should I check?

When I record the screen with ATCapture, the microphone audio is not captured. Are there any specific settings I should verify inside ATCapture or Windows?

Question

When I start a screen recording in ATCapture, the video is recorded correctly but my microphone audio is missing. I have a USB microphone connected and it works in other apps like Teams and Zoom.

I’m on Windows 11. Is there any specific setting in ATCapture or Windows that I should change so that audio is included in the recording?

There are a couple of places to check – both in Windows and in ATCapture:

  1. In Windows, go to Sound settings → Input and make sure your USB mic is set as the default input device.
  2. Open ATCapture’s recording settings and confirm that the same input device is selected for Microphone.
  3. Start a short test recording (5–10 seconds) and verify the input level indicator moves while you speak.
  4. If you’re using any privacy tools, ensure they allow microphone access for ATCapture.

Once I set the default input device correctly and selected it in ATCapture, my microphone audio started recording without issues.

Answer

In my case, ATCapture was recording audio, but it was just too low to hear. Increasing the mic level in Windows and in my audio driver’s control panel fixed it.
